To be able to buy high-power rocket motors and launch high-power rockets, you need to become certified by the National Organization of Rocketry or a similar organization. There are three certification levels, in increasing order of difficulty, starting with L1 (Level 1). Unsurprisingly, L1 certification is the easiest to achieve.
Building and launching an L1 rocket is a relatively simple and fun way to get some hands-on engineering experience! It’s also really satisfying and rewarding to fly something that you’ve built completely by yourself.
The skills you learn by getting L1 certified will get you familiar with the world of rocketry and prepare you well for team rocket exploits. Additionally, if you’re interested in model rocketry, an L1 certification will teach you the basic skills you need to succeed, as well as letting you buy the motors you will need.
More information on success criteria and the certification process can be found here.
Although building a rocket with no experience can seem daunting, Team Lead Nico Moldovean has put together some detailed videos and PowerPoints to help you on your way. Check out the brief explanations below, or jump straight down to the L1 Building Slides Shortlist.
